Mayhem hadnât expected the sense of pride he felt as he showed Bella around his home. He didnât know what sort of home sheâd had before landing here, but it had been impossible to miss her apprehension at what sheâd find inside. That irked him a little. He wasnât an animal, despite what the verexi believed. The scrawnies had named them faârel, which was an old word meaning a wild beast.
The verexi were wrong. He was a thinking, feeling male. Not an animal.
âWe found an entire crate of these with the supplies they left for us. They were all broken, but we managed to repair enough of them to ensure we all have one.â He gestured to the heating cube that took up one corner of the small kitchen. It was large enough to warm the entire room, and the upper surface doubled as a cooktop. Bysshe had taught them to boil their water and cook their food to avoid getting sick. Heâd been dubious at first but had quickly learned to like his meat cooked. It was far better than the shapeless dollops of ground raw meat the verexi had fed them.
âRunning water, as promised,â he said as she followed him into another room. The glow-pods here were set into the wall and could be activated by a touch. Bella watched him turn on the first one and then activated the last two herself. Good. He wanted her to feel at home here.
âHow?â she asked as she looked around at the bathtub, shower area, and toilet.
He pointed upward. âSeveral cisterns up there gather rainwater. The pipes are salvaged from the ship. The wastewater is carried away by more pipes and gravity. The fixtures were in the supplies the scrawnies sent. It really was the strangest assortment of stuff.â
Bella wrinkled her nose. âThey probably offloaded whatever junk they could find to stuff in the containers. I mean, do verexi even take baths? Youâd think theyâd be afraid to slip on the soap and break every bone in their spindly bodies.â
He burst out laughing. âWe can only hope they all die that way.â Then he drew her into his arms, his cock stirring at the thought of the two of them together in the tub. âYou will never have to worry about that, though. I will hold you while you bathe, so there is no risk of falling.â
Bella lifted her head slightly to look him in the eye. âYou did a pretty good job of holding on to me when we were in the pool today. Speaking of which⦠why did we use the pool when you have indoor plumbing?â
A twinkle in the depths of her deep green eyes told him she had already guessed the reason, but he answered her anyway. âBecause it was faster that way. I knew how much you wanted to get clean.â
âOh yes, of course. That was entirely for my benefit.â She smiled and touched the center of his chest where the marks intersected. A pleasant
